We’re all familiar by now with facelifts and that windswept look that a poorly-done facelift creates. But there are more ways than just facelifts to rejuvenate the face. With the ongoing rise in popularity of cosmetic surgery, and the development of ever-more-sophisticated technology and techniques, we can put the clock back in many ways.
Facial Implants
This is one of the less well-known procedures. A fully-trained and experienced cosmetic surgeon can insert cheek, jaw, or chin implants to give the facial bone structure more definition. High cheek bones have long been an admired facial feature, and “a weak chin” has long been used in fiction to quickly describe a weak-natured person, someone not to be easily trusted.
There are of course many stereotypes when it comes to physical appearance. But it remains true that a well-defined facial bone structure shows well in photographs and helps make up for the age-related sagging we all encounter. Facial implants can give more balance to your face by strengthening the jawline and bringing the chin and cheekbones into better harmony with the rest of the face. They can even be done as part of a facelift in a really dramatic facial rejuvenation.
Being a Good Candidate
Facial implants will rejuvenate the face, but not necessarily bring perfection to it. That’s one of the things to accept if you want to qualify as a good candidate. And as with all surgery, another thing to accept is that there is some risk, some possible complications:
• A facial implant could shift out of position and need a second surgery to adjust it
• Infection could occur, although you would be given an antibiotic to prevent it. But sometimes people forget to take their medications.
There are side effects after every surgery too, but they are not the same thing as complications. Side effects are minor and temporary. Examples are bruising, swelling, and pain or discomfort. If you are willing to accept these things, and follow your cosmetic surgeon’s instructions, you are very likely to have an easy and successful surgery and recovery period and very pleasing facial rejuvenation.
How Facial Implants are Done
Chin implants
Your plastic surgeon would already have determined the best size and shape of implant to use. You will probably have general anesthesia, which will render you entirely unconscious. The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The implant is inserted into a pocket on the front of the jawbone, through a small incision inside the mouth, in the lower lip. The area will be taped afterwards and the sutures will dissolve by themselves.
For a few days there is some bruising and swelling and you may not want to talk or smile very much. Your plastic surgeon will give you directions about eating and caring for your teeth, and any restrictions on your activity while you heal.
Cheek implants
These implants are placed into pockets over the cheekbones, and the procedure takes about 45 minutes. Incisions are made inside the upper lip or in the lower eyelids. If you are having cheek implants done as part of a facelift, or along with eyelid surgery or a forehead lift, the cheek implants can be inserted through incisions made for those enhancements.
For some days there will be swelling and discomfort, depending on how extensive the surgery was – whether it included rejuvenating procedures other than cheek implants. You will have dressings and a pain medication, and your plastic surgeon will instruct you about dietary restrictions and limitations on your activities. Be sure and follow those instructions for the best recovery and facial results.
Jaw implants
A jaw implant surgery takes from one to two hours. Incisions are made in the lower lip on each side, pockets are created and the implants positioned. The sutures closing the incisions will dissolve. Swelling will mostly subside in about two days, and then more slowly for several weeks. As with chin and cheek implants, your plastic surgeon will direct you how to eat, brush and floss your teeth, and move your jaw area.
Facial implants will give your face a new look immediately. But the full rejuvenation effect may take weeks or even months to become evident. Unless you tell them, not many people will notice that you have had cheek, chin, or jaw implants. But they will definitely notice that you look good, you look fresh and healthy, and perhaps they’ll assume you’ve had a vacation or found a new special person.
