Rhinoplasty is one of the hardest procedures for any plastic surgeon. The nose is at the center of the face and it is both a highly visible and highly characteristic feature. In order to be considered a good nose job, your rhinoplasty surgeon must understand, respect, and maintain the characteristics that make your nose unique. However, at the same time, the surgeon must transform your nose to correspond to many different mathematical relations that determine the attractiveness of the nose in correspondence with ancient principles of beauty.
In the Middle
In an aesthetically ideal face, the distance from the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose should be one third of the face's total height, while the nose's width should be one-fifth the width of the face.
The Nasofrontal Angle
The nasofrontal angle defines the shape of the top of the nose. It is the angle between the plane of the brow ridge, and the top of the nose. According to classical aesthetics, this angle should range from 115 to 130 degrees.
In controlling this angle, the surgeon not only refines the relation to the brow ridge, but also alters the projection of the nose. The horizontal reference line for the face is from the top of the auditory canal to the bottom of the eye socket. The baseline for the nose is perpendicular to this line and runs through the crease at the side of the nose. The projection is a line to the baseline. The length of this tip-line is known as the projection of the nose. In classical aesthetics, the triangle formed by the baseline, the projection, and the bridge of the nose should approximate a 3-4-5 right triangle with the angle between the bridge of the nose and the vertical should be between 30-40 degrees.
Lower Face Angles
A line from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin should intersect the line defined by the bridge of the nose, at an angle of 120-130 degrees. The lips should be 2-4 mm behind this line. The nasolabial angle, the angle between the bottom of the nose and the philtrum, the depression that defines the center of the cupid's bow of the lips, is a central characteristic in defining whether a profile is masculine or feminine. The masculine angle should be close to 90 degrees, whereas the feminine angle is closer to 120 degrees.
Rhinoplasty is a difficult art, and many plastic surgeons are moving away from practicing it. Although they advertise and perform nose jobs, the truth is that any case they consider to be "difficult" or "challenging" is referred to a specialist, keeping only the ones they consider to be easy or mundane. But your nose is central to your appearance, and you owe it to yourself to get more than just the "easy" or "mundane" treatment for your nose.
