A shapely, well-toned abdomen is something most people yearn for. We eat right and exercise, trying to achieve a flat stomach. But time and gravity can take its toll on our abdominal region. Even those with an otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop a stomach that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:
• Pregnancy
• Aging
• Significant fluctuations in weight
• Heredity
• Prior surgery
An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery removes excess fat and skin. And in many cases the procedure restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdomen that is smooth and firm.
What it’s not
An abdominoplasty is not a solution for weight loss; nor is it a substitute for dieting and exercising. While the results of a tummy tuck are permanent, the positive outcome can be negatively impacted by notable fluctuations in your weight. Because of this, if you are planning on significant weight loss or are anticipating a future pregnancy, you should consider postponing this procedure.
Tummy tuck surgery can also not correct stretch marks—though these can be improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be removed; generally positioned below the belly button.
Are you a good candidate?
A good candidate for tummy tuck surgery:
• Is close to their ideal body weight (within 30%)
• Has had stable weight for at least six months
• Wants to remove specific areas of loose skin or fat that is diet- and exercise-resistant
• Has good skin tone and elasticity
• Has realistic expectations
• Is emotionally stable
• Understands and accepts the risks of surgery
The procedure
Our experienced plastic surgeons will make an incision across the lower abdomen from one hipbone to the other. A second incision is made around the belly button, and your skin and fat are separated from your abdominal wall. The excess skin and fat are then excised and your abdominal muscles are tightened as they are shortened and sutured together.
